America's manufacturers in World War Two were engaged in the greatest military machine industrial endeavour in history. The American aircraft industry was given impetus at the early on part of the war past the need from the British and French for aircraft to supplement their own domestic production. The 1939 Neutrality Act permitted belligerents to learn armaments from US manufacturers provided they paid in cash and used their own transportation - "cash and behave". The British Purchasing Commission had been ready prior to the state of war to arrange purchase of aircraft and the British and French dealt directly with manufacturers paying from their financial reserves. After French republic fell to Germany, many of the orders for shipping were taken over past the British. By 1940, the British had ordered $1,200,000,000 worth of aircraft.[five] This led to some aircraft, such as the Northward American P-51 Mustang, being designed and produced to run across European requirements and and so beingness adopted by the United states of america. Knudsen, an automotive industry executive who was made Chairman of the Part of Product Management and member of the National Defense Advisory Commission past the Roosevelt administration to organize state of war production, said, "Nosotros won because we smothered the enemy in an barrage of product, the like of which he had never seen, nor dreamed possible."[eight]
