Answer

FWIW, the asset tag utility mentioned past LemP simply works on systems running MS-DOS. For more than information and a possible Dell email contact, see the link below.

Dell'south Service Tag -- which is normally on a sticker on the outside of the computer -- is Dell's manner to place the detail unit received from the mill.  It's encoded in the BIOS so that Dell'southward online scanner can locate it if the owner can't find information technology or if information technology has become discrete or illegible.

There's no service tag in the replacement mobo considering it can be installed in computers with a diverseness of configurations -- and because Dell apparently didn't feel that it was cost-effective to customize it just for you (assuming that you submitted the original service tag when y'all ordered the replacement mobo).

Doing some quick Google searching reveals that Dell has -- or at to the lowest degree had at ane fourth dimension -- several utilities that purportedly were able to configure a service tag in a new/replacement mobo.  Most of the links to svctag.exe and nugget.com are expressionless or outdated.

If information technology were me, I would phone call Dell and ask them for the correct utility, explaining why y'all desire/need information technology.
However, if you want to take a adventure on bricking the machine, meet http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/19369-Dell-Bios-Editing-Removing-Bios-Lock-Changing-Service-Asset-Tag-Software-Here or do your own search using the detail Dell model.  Or try asking on a Dell forum.

In any event, I'd just advise the customer to use the original service tag from the sticker whenever they need to find drivers or other info about the figurer.
